# How to Build a Defensible Moat as an Agentic AI Company

**The Platform Companies**
If you can build multiple moats, integrate deeply, and create real switching costs—you can build a venture-scale business.
But it requires discipline. Focus. And the willingness to say no to customers who want features that don't strengthen your moat.
## The Bottom Line: Moats Are Built, Not Discovered

Your agents are not your moat. Your model is not your moat. Your "proprietary architecture" is definitely not your moat.
Your moat is the sum total of switching costs, learned patterns, integrated workflows, and encoded expertise that you build deliberately over 12-24 months.

- Make moat-building a first-class priority, not a side effect

- Say no to features that don't strengthen their moat
- Accept that building moats takes time and discipline

- Chase every new model release and architectural trend
- Build features customers want instead of moats they need
- Assume their technology alone creates defensibility
- Try to build all moats at once and build none well
